These inspiring chakra symbols were first visualised by the great yogis of the East. They were also called ‘seers’ as they could see the chakras illuminated within themselves. You too can contemplate the chakras every day to rebalance and vitalise yourself.

Use this chakra chart as a tool to enhance your meditation and inner illumination. Scan the symbols at the beginning of your meditation practice. Then focus on one chakra at a time. Starting from the base chakra move your awareness upward to the crown and then back down to the base. Simultaneously place your awareness in your spine in the region of that chakra. You can also breathe into and out of this area while chanting the name of that chakra mentally or using a mantra (see Chakra Meditation CD and MP3 for further guidance).

Each chakra has a physical, psychological and psychic meaning:

Consciousness resides in Sahasrara Chakra. Located at the top of the head it is the centre of highest consciousness, our infinite, cosmic Self.

Mind is found in Ajna Chakra. Located behind the eyebrow centre it is the 'command centre' where we can hear the voice of intuition, the inner Guru guiding us.

Communication is governed by Vishuddhi Chakra which lies in the spine behind the throat pit. It controls our ability to turn thoughts into language and other forms of expression so that others can hear and understand us.

The heart and feelings are governed by Anahata Chakra which controls the chest, heart and lungs, and our feelings of love, empathy and compassion. Its strength determines our ability to love unconditionally.

Power is generated through Manipura Chakra. Located in the spine behind the navel, it controls the digestive system, how well we digest food and all of life's experiences.

Joy is found in Swadhisthana Chakra. Located in the spine behind the pubic bone, it controls the pleasures of life, sensuality, sexuality, enjoyment and satisfaction.

Security is governed by Mooladhara Chakra. Located in the pelvic floor, it controls sexuality and reproduction (along with swadhisthana chakra). It also governs our basic survival instincts, our will to live, and our desire for material security.
