Facing the Shadow
How to unify the dark and light aspects of your mind and emotions
Recorded Seminar: 2 x 90 minutes | Guided Master Meditation | CPD Points: 3 hrs | US$97.00
Facing the Shadow Online Seminars explore the journey from darkness to light and from limited consciousness to blazing self-awareness.
These recorded seminars reveal and examine the psychological shadow from both the Western Psychology and from the Yoga Psychology perspective. This a unique study to Big Shakti.
This unique study to Big Shakti is a rare opportunity for you to learn from a medical doctor, psychotherapist and yoga master in the comfort of your own home.
You’ll learn about the force that separates you from wholeness, how the shadow operates in the world, in society, and in relationships. You learn about the shadow from both Eastern and Western perspectives, and in relationship to ego and identity.
Mostly, you will discover how an unexplored and unconscious shadow hides your true nature and prevents you from living an expressive and authentic life. You’ll gain knowledge and tools to remedy this.
Discover how to:
- engage with the disowned parts of you
- manage negative feelings; shame, resentment, anger
- understand why you may project your shadow onto others
- establish a positive relationship with your shadow
- integrate the shadow into your higher self (and not become absorbed into it)
Dr Swami Shankardev Saraswati is one of the forerunners of Yoga Therapy. A Yoga Acharya (authority of yoga), MD and Psychotherapist – all in one, he authored several Yoga Therapy books including Yogic Management of Asthma and Diabetes, The Effects of Yoga on Hypertension, and The Practice of Yoga for the Digestive System. He is also a contributor and editor to 5 classical Bihar School of Yoga books.
Big Shakti Co-founder and collaborator, Jayne Stevenson studied Daoist philosophy and martial arts, and Eastern and Western esotericism for over 30 years. She has also studied yoga tantra theory and practice for over 15 years. Her in-depth studies of the mind through the works of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell have evolved into deep insight, intuition, and knowledge about the human psyche and dream states.
Western Psychology and the Shadow
From the western perspective and in Jungian psychology, the shadow refers to the unconscious aspects of the personality which the conscious ego does not identify with. It contains the parts of us that we cannot accept and that we therefore reject.
We tend to reject the least desirable parts of our personality and therefore the shadow contains largely negative elements. The shadow also contains many of the strengths and abilities that we cannot accept in ourselves.
Everyone carries a shadow and the less embodied it is in the individual’s conscious life the blacker and denser it is.
The shadow can drive us to think, feel and act in ways that are very destructive. Therefore, in order to develop a healthy psyche we need to engage with and enlighten the shadow. Certain forms of yoga and meditation are wonderfully suited to this task.
Yoga Psychology and the Shadow
In yoga psychology, the shadow refers to the psychic sheath which connects our ego to the universal self. Certain yoga and meditation techniques, which we teach in this seminar, enable us to illuminate the psychic sheath and integrate the shadow elements contained within it into our conscious mind.
The knowledge and techniques taught in this seminar enable us to be aware of the shadow in everyday life so that we are not driven by it, and to develop the psychic maturity to be able to integrate elements of the shadow into our conscious ego to become a more sane person. We move from being a divided self to a unified self.
It’s important to be aware that your shadow exists and that you are driven by dark forces no matter how much you wish to relate to and project the light forces.

Yoga is such an ancient practice, at times seemingly too complex to understand, let alone master, because of its depth and its roots in antiquity. Yet, Big Shakti makes it so modern and available to all of us, regardless of whether one is a beginner or a teacher. Big Shakti takes yoga, with its many facets – philosophy, postures, breath, psychology, health and lifestyle, and puts it in a down-to-earth, user-friendly format. As a counselor, I have really appreciated deepening my understanding of both yoga and Western psychology, and I have seen the value this brings that to my clients. In addition, what makes Big Shakti really valuable is the integrity, sincerity, knowledge, skill and warmth of Swami Shankardev and Jayne Stevenson. I can ask them anything and know I will get accuracy, experience, expert knowledge and wisdom. I have made a pledge to myself to attend every course Big Shakti offers.
Big Shakti’s study programs provide a path to enlightenment and a practical yet highly spiritual means of attaining a more aware state, wherever you are in your own development. Both Swami Shankardev and Jayne support your growth and learning in a safe, loving environment where questions are seen as part of the learning. The structure of the theory has given me the basis on which to build. It has helped me to understand so much about my life and the lives of those around me. I feel supported and held.
Big Shakti’s online programs are planned with extreme care and knowledge and they are valuable tools for self-study. They are easy to follow, and they always make me feel as if the teacher is in my mind, knowing my needs, and what I want to explore. Either it is a meditation, a Yoga Nidra or a program about facing our shadow, or discovering our life’s purpose, their quality and power is unique.
My absolute trust for Big Shakti’s team, that derives from all the benefits I’ve enjoyed since I started practicing its beautiful methods. It is very comforting to have the possibility of choosing a grounding meditation when feeling agitated, or the facing the shadow meditation when having the need of looking deep in my soul. What I like most about Big Shakti’s work, is that they provide knowledge and experience in a structured way, with care, love and, yes, empathy. It is like having a trusted friend that helps you when needed.
