Dr Swami Shankardev Saraswati is a western medical doctor, yoga Acharya (authority), yoga therapist, author and teacher. He integrates western mind-body medicine and psychotherapy with eastern methods of mind-body development and awakening consciousness. He is a highly experienced teacher of yoga, yoga-tantra and other systems of self-development that lead to greater self-awareness and self-mastery.
Swami Shankardev has 35 years of experience in a medical and yoga therapy setting. He has been given the mission to teach advanced principles of yoga-tantra and meditation and to integrate these principles and techniques into a western medical setting. He has helped thousands of people to understand and experience the mind-body connection and to regain health, mental peace and spiritual awareness.
India
Swami Shankardev graduated in medicine from Sydney University in 1976 and then traveled to live in India for 10 years at the Bihar School of Yoga where he studied yoga and yoga therapy under the direct guidance of Swami Satyananda. During this time he was trained to teach advanced practices of yoga-tantra and wrote several books on yoga and yoga therapy published by the Bihar School of Yoga (see below). He played a role in the development of the Satyananda (Bihar) Yoga system up to 1985.
Research
He returned to Australia in 1985 to conduct research into the physiology of yoga at the university of NSW, completing a Master of Science degree in 1990. He is still engaged in researching the combination of yoga, meditation and eastern methods of healing with modern western medical science.
Medical Practice
His holistic general medical practice specializes in mind-body medicine and the treatment of all kinds of chronic physical and psychological conditions. He integrates western psychological medicine and psychotherapy with eastern methods of mind-body development. Modalities used include Western and Ayurvedic medicine, counseling, psychotherapy, hypnosis, yoga therapy and several forms of meditation. He believes in health education as a means to empower people to take more conscious control of their lives.
Seminars and Workshops
Since 1976 Swami Shankardev has toured extensively and taught throughout India, Europe, the USA and Australia.
Between 2001 – 2006 he traveled as an ambassador for the Bihar School of Yoga throughout the USA and South America.
He teaches yoga, meditation, yoga therapy, yoga psychology, philosophy, psychotherapy, Ayurveda and healing. He is known for his capacity to communicate complex esoteric concepts with simplicity and ease, and with humor and compassion.
