Practitioner Pathway
The Foundation Program
This is a one-year foundational training designed to take you from first principles through to the point where you can begin reading a chart for another person with structure, understanding, and confidence.
The program is made up of four sequential courses. Each builds directly on the one before it, so that rather than collecting isolated pieces of astrological knowledge, you gradually learn how the different elements of a Jyotiṣa chart work together.
Alongside the Core Content classes are interpretive mentorship sessions known as Digestions. These are an important part of the learning process, giving students the opportunity to work with the material, ask questions, examine charts, and develop the pattern recognition that cannot be learned from theory alone.
Students typically complete the full program over one year, with some flexibility to move more quickly or slowly depending on experience, capacity, and available study time.
The program forms part of the curriculum of The Cosmic Kaleidoscope, a live, interactive learning environment devoted to preserving and transmitting Jyotiṣa and related teachings through the oral tradition.
Lineage
The teachings in this program come through a long and living lineage, transmitted principally through Hart de Fouw, widely regarded as one of the master Jyotiṣīs of our time.
Hart underwent more than fifteen years of one-on-one instruction with his teacher in the Vedic tradition, learning Jyotiṣa in the traditional manner — orally, chart by chart, through direct transmission rather than through books alone.
He is co-author, with Dr. Robert Svoboda, of Light on Life and Light on Relationships, works that helped make authentic Jyotiṣa accessible to generations of Western students. He has taught internationally for decades and trained many serious students and practitioners.
What distinguishes Hart's teaching is not only the depth of his knowledge of the classical texts and oral tradition, but his ability to communicate that knowledge systematically, with clarity, precision, and humor. It is this curriculum, and this standard of teaching, that the Foundation Program carries forward.
Foundation Program
Level 1
An accessible yet in-depth introduction to the Jyotiṣa chart and its underlying astronomy.
This course focuses on a comprehensive study of the grahas (planets), including their inherent nature, meanings, strengths, and weaknesses. Students are also introduced to the meanings of the houses and constellations, nakṣatra (lunar mansion) identification, daśā sequence, and navāmsha calculation.
By the end of Level 1, students have established the vocabulary and structural understanding needed to begin bringing the major elements of a chart together.

Level 2
The next stage is learning how the individual components of the chart begin to speak to one another. This is where Jyotiṣa starts to move from a collection of meanings into a living interpretive process.
Students learn to weave together the meanings of the grahas and bhāvas (houses), recognizing patterns of confluence and contrast and beginning to see the larger narrative emerging from a chart.
By the end of Level 2, students can begin combining grahas and bhāvas to recognise patterns, contrasts, and the emerging narrative within a chart.

Level 3
Building on this foundation, students begin working with yogas — combinations of astrological factors that reveal larger patterns and potentials within a life.
Students work directly with the texts, learning not simply to identify or catalog yogas, but to consider whether and how a particular combination may bear fruit within the wider context of the chart.
By the end of Level 3, students can identify important yogas in a chart and assess how strongly those combinations are likely to manifest in a person’s life.

Level 4
The final stage of the series brings the material together.
Students develop the ability to tell the story of a chart by integrating what has been learned across the first three courses. Rather than relying on a cookbook approach, the emphasis is on developing a coherent, responsive reading that addresses the individual person and the questions they bring.
By the end of the series, students are well on their way to conducting lively, insightful readings that offer a meaningful framework for understanding an individual's particular destiny patterns.

You pay for each course as you go. There is no obligation to pay for the entire Foundation Program before beginning Basics 1.
A few things distinguish this program
Practice with real charts.
Jyotiṣa is not learned by memorizing definitions alone. Each class includes time working through multiple real charts so that the principles can be seen in different contexts. Over time, this develops the pattern recognition that sits at the heart of good chart interpretation.
Live participation.
Classes are held live in real-time virtual classrooms, with active participation encouraged. The intention is to create a learning environment in which questions can be explored, charts discussed, and understanding developed through interaction rather than passive viewing.
Homework.
Each class includes homework. Jyotiṣa is learned by doing, and this is where students begin testing their understanding, finding the gaps, and making the material their own.
Study groups with assistants.
Students also have access to supported study groups where assistants can help with individual questions, revisit difficult material, and help consolidate what is being learned between classes.
Alternative Pathway:
Classes and Seminars
An alternative Jyotiṣa study pathway is a series of standalone classes and seminars exploring different aspects of Indian Vedic astrology. Rather than following a sequential training program, these sessions allow you to enter Jyotiṣa through specific themes, teachings, and areas of interest.
Across the series, you will gain a broader understanding of the philosophy, symbolism, structure, and practical applications of Jyotiṣa, along with directed reading and study to help you continue exploring the subject in your own time.
This pathway is well suited to those who are deeply interested in Jyotiṣa and want a meaningful education in the tradition without committing to the full training program. It offers the opportunity to study important ideas in depth, build a richer understanding of how Jyotiṣa approaches life and destiny, and develop greater familiarity with its language and worldview.
It is important to be clear about what this pathway is — and what it is not. The classes and seminars are educational rather than practitioner training. They will not, on their own, teach you how to read a horoscope for another person. That capacity develops through the sustained, sequential study, repeated chart practice, homework, and mentorship built into the Complete Foundation Program.
So, if your interest is primarily in learning, exploring, and deepening your understanding of Jyotiṣa, this pathway offers a substantial and flexible way to do that. If your aim is to become capable of reading charts confidently and responsibly, the Complete Foundation Program is the appropriate path.
