Rest, revitalize, rejuvenate.

3 Keys to Awaken Prana, Heal Yourself

  • Key 1 - Relax all the parts of the body to remove tensions and blockages and open the channels for prana to flow.

  • Key 2 - Make your breath as long, slow and subtle as possible. Move your prana and store it in the third eye (ajna chakra) at the eyebrow center.

  • Key 3 - Use your breath to guide prana through the tissues of the body to heal and strengthen your body and mind.

What is Prana?

Prana is the energy at the basis of all creation. Everything that exists, animate and inanimate, is a manifestation of energy in one form or another.

Prana within living beings is a special form of energy. It is the life force and is your most precious possession. It is your “vital energy”, your inner power and strength.

The word prana translates as breath and respiration, as well as spirit. At the subtlest and the most refined level, it is your spiritual essence.

This wonderful drawing by the artist Alex Grey is a beautiful representation of the various living intelligent subtle energies underlying your physical body and your persona, the outer personality you present to the world.

What is the difference between Yoga Nidra and Prana Nidra?

While Yoga Nidra is a passive practice, Prana Nidra is an active practice. Like Yoga Nidra, you perform it in the lying position. However, instead of remaining passive and simply watching the breath, you engage the powerful yogic breathing technique ujjayi pranayama to awaken prana, the life force contained within the breath. In the practice of Prana Nidra, you send energy to different parts of your body, to heal those parts and to improve health, strength, and longevity.

Strengthen your prana

If your prana is low or imbalanced, you feel weak and become prone to illness. Your body, mind, emotions and intellect cannot function optimally.

When your prana is strong, balanced, and in tune with nature, you are powerful and creative. You have energy (prana) to power and support your body, mind, intelligence and intuition.

One of the best ways to balance and strengthen your life force is to use ujjayi pranayama, called the psychic breath and the yoga breath.

What happens in Pranic Healing?

In training to move your prana, you initially need to learn to slow and lengthen your breath. Ujjayi pranayama is the best way to do this. The breath becomes very subtle. Eventually, you are able to tune into the subtle energy, your prana, that is contained within the breath.

Once you can do this, you learn how to move the breath between certain chakras in order to distribute prana to parts of the body that need healing or rejuvenation.

By learning how to awaken and direct prana while in the lying meditative position, you can remove blockages and clear stagnant energy from your body, mind and emotions, which can otherwise prevent the natural flow of energy and lead to disease.

Releasing these blockages makes you feel more balanced and invigorated. You build greater resilience and immunity. Many people use this technique to manage and ease chronic illness and physical challenges. As you increase your energy and heal your body, you will be better able to cope with the stresses of everyday life. This reduces the effects of aging and supports a full and active life.

“As long as prana is retained in the body the individual soul does not leave the body. The departure of prana from the body is death. Therefore, prana should be controlled.’ The best way to do this is to learn and apply ujjayi pranayama to experience your prana and to send prana to parts of the body that need healing and strengthening."
