eMag ~ The Shadow Revisited

The Shadow Revisited

This month, we're turning inward to revisit the shadow.

It's a journey many of us feel called to, yet just as many hesitate to begin.

Many people we work with deeply value kindness and goodness. They live with pure intentions and are passionate about spiritual growth, but often overlook the darker aspects of the psyche.

This hesitation is understandable. It can be tempting to focus solely on our positive qualities and aspirations. For spiritual seekers, there's often a strong desire to leave behind the parts of themselves that feel heavy, complex, or uncomfortable.

Yet, the more we turn away from those less luminous parts, the more power we unknowingly grant them to shape our thoughts, relationships, and choices. Light seekers can ironically attract shadows like magnets precisely because of this refusal to look into the darkness.

As Carl Jung famously observed: "One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious."

This wisdom applies to all aspects of our shadow. We each have parts of ourselves we'd rather not see: anger, fear, envy and perhaps more surprisingly, talents and brilliance. Sometimes we're more afraid of our gifts than our darkness, worried that fully expressing them will alienate others or burden us with responsibility.

Shadow work is the gentle art of meeting these parts with compassion, again and again.

It's this understanding that inspired us to create the Facing the Shadow Online Course, a way to explore your inner world through the lens of Jungian psychology and yoga-tantra.

Your shadow is not your enemy; it's simply the unmet parts of yourself, waiting patiently for your loving attention.

If you've ever felt stuck in troubling patterns or longed for a deeper sense of emotional freedom and self-acceptance, it may be time to approach your shadow with gentle curiosity and tap into more of your inner power.

Reflection

"The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you are looking for. The damned thing in the cave that was so dreaded has become the center. You find the jewel, and it draws you off. In loving the spiritual, you cannot despise the earthly." Joseph Campbell

Here are 5 reflection points to consider as you move through the month:

1. The Light-Only Trap

"What am I trying to transcend, and how might this effort be creating more shadow?" Notice where you push toward only positive thoughts or light. What happens to your authenticity when you refuse to acknowledge difficult emotions? How might your spiritual practice be creating internal division?

2. The Perfection Illusion

"Where am I 'performing' instead of living my spirituality?" Explore the gap between your spiritual ideals and lived experience. What parts of yourself do you judge as "unspiritual"? How might embracing your humanness deepen your spiritual connection?

3. Hidden Power and Gifts

"What talents do I dim to maintain my 'spiritual' image?" Notice where you downplay your intelligence or creativity to appear humble. What fears arise when you consider fully expressing your gifts? How might false humility be spiritual bypassing?

4. The Projection Mirror

"What qualities in others trigger my strongest reactions?" Pay attention to people who annoy you or inspire envy. These reactions often point to rejected parts of yourself. How would your life change if you embodied these qualities?

5. Embracing Wholeness

"How can I use the integration of my shadow to help, not hurt, my spiritual progress?" What would authentic spirituality look like if it included all parts of you?

Understanding the shadow through Jayne's dreamwork

Behind the Scenes

Most days, I journal my dreams in the morning, but often, my dream recall stalls. Sometimes it returns later in the day, and when it does, I'm ready with a pen.

My lifelong work with dreams has taught me to trust their timing and wisdom - an understanding that shapes how I work with clients.. This photo shows me diagramming a client's dream, creating a visual map we'll use as a meditative practice.

Whether it's a vivid dream from sleep, a persistent daydream that haunts our waking hours, a memory that keeps surfacing, or an unlived aspiration that calls to us, these experiences connect us directly with our shadow. Hidden aspects of ourselves emerge through images and feelings we don't yet fully recognize - pieces of our psyche waiting to be integrated.

Whether frightening, absurd, tender, or strangely familiar, these imaginings carry energies we've pushed away or forgotten. They offer a pathway back to self-awareness, vitality, and wholeness.

Working with a client's dream creates a threshold space between the conscious and unconscious worlds. Before any analysis, I listen deeply, sensing what seeks expression. Then we explore together, trusting the dream's own wisdom to illuminate its secrets.

The shadow is patient, waiting to be met with kindness. When it is, something lost begins its journey home. 💗
